I’ve heard lots of things about puff pastry. “It’s difficult”, they say. “It’s time consuming”, they say. “It promises you everything and leaves you with NOTHING”, they say. Possibly. Maybe that’s shortcrust pastry. I’m not a pastry expert. Which probably makes you wonder why I’ve decided to do a step-by-step to puff pastry. But anyway, puff pastry is nowhere near as difficult as I’d convinced myself it would be! Stop! Pastry time!

I did not realise, when I decided to make this, how much of an arse-ache it would be to get pasta shells. I naively went to my usual supermarket and happily (that bit might be a lie, grocery shopping makes me angry) trotted (also a lie, I never trot) up and down the aisles picking up my shopping, when I got to the pasta aisle. I looked at the big pasta shapes they had. Not there. “Hmm,” I thought, “I must not be looking properly” (this happens a lot). I looked at the small pasta shells. Nope, not there either. In fact, after 10 minutes of searching (and panicking) it transpired that they did not stock large pasta shells. They had what can only be described as slightly-larger-than-small-but-not-even-medium-sized pasta shells. (more…)

Gnocchi with sausage and bolognese, or what happens when I don’t make decisions

I am terrible, TERRIBLE, at making decisions. Shall we go to this restaurant or that restaurant? Should I have cheesecake or sticky toffee pudding? Or the chocolate fondant? Do I really want garlic bread if I’m having pizza? (Yes, yes I do). And it’s not just food decisions I can’t make. Do I want to watch my new, exciting Lovefilm or another episode of the Sopranos? Do I want to read at lunchtime or go running? (Admittedly, deciding which I’d prefer here isn’t difficult, but oh, the guilt if I don’t run). Do I think this dress is beautiful or is it actually so hideous that it’s become interesting, but ultimately unwearable? (more…)

Look at these. They lasted about 20 minutes. My nan has been making sausage rolls since I was very little and I don’t know how many times she’s been requested to make them over the years. They’re so good that I assumed they must be difficult to make, but, and it seems so obvious when you think about it, you only really need two ingredients and they can be ready to go in the oven in less than 15 minutes. Sausage and mustard pasta

I know what you’re thinking. You’re thinking you won’t like this because mustard is gross. Really, really gross. Seriously, who likes mustard? Definitely not me. I like this pasta though. A lot. And I’m sure you will like this pasta enough to point out something on the tv to whoever you’re eating with and then steal bits off their plate (do you ever eat something too quickly and then you’re jealous that other people still have food left? Sucks.). (more…)
