Yesterday I had a lesson in icing cupcakes to look like roses from my sister-in-law (near enough :)), Claire (who runs her own cupcake business, Sweet Sugar Sixpence. Have a look!).
You can tell from the photo that I started in the bottom lefthand corner, hehe. I’d got the hang of it by the last cupcake but it’s still a bit gutting that the best one on there (the one above the bottom right-hand corner) was done by Claire’s four year old daughter, Maisy. On the other hand, I didn’t throw a wobbly because I’d spilt my soup on the carpet. Yeah. I think we all know who the winner is here. Yes, I do know Maisy’s 4 and I’m 24. What’s your point?
The technique Claire showed me is a reverse cupcake swirl. Using a Wilton 1M tip, start from the centre of the cupcake and work outwards. You can find a good video showing this method here.
Thank you Claire!
Beautiful…i’d stuff them in a vase but I’d have stuffed them in my face first.
Yeah, they didn’t last long! The first one wasn’t so beautiful, but they definitely improved 🙂
ADORABLE!!! just found your blog! YAY! can’t wait to browse around 🙂

Thanks! Hope you like it 🙂
How pretty! I’m thinking of taking cake or cupcake decorating lessons–I can never figure out how to stop without it looking wonky.
I’d love to do cupcake decorating lesson as well. Icing certainly is not my forte, and I tend to give up with the piping bags and get a good old fashioned spoon out! 😀
The taste will always be lovely, whether the decorating isn’t quite up to scratch, but there’s definitely a satisfaction in making them all perfect for that wow factor – and hearing people say ‘wow, they look amazing!’.
Despite a number of classes, I am still awful at decorating cupcakes. Yours look amazing!
